Want to know how to make the perfect guacamole? Well, you’ve come to the right place!

I kid you not, my arm was sore the day after the first time I made guacamole. Those avocados can be tricky little suckers to mash! During my next guacamole making attempt,  I decided to take a different approach and cut the avocado into smaller pieces, hoping they would be easier to mash. And guess what… they were! I have FINALLY perfected the method to my madness and would love to share it with you!

To make the perfect guacamole, start by cutting the avocado in half lengthwise and remove the pit. CAUTION: do NOT remove the avocado from its shell just yet.

With the tip of your knife, slice the avocado (in the shell) lengthwise about an half an inch apart. Make sure that you slice the avocado all the way down to the shell, but do NOT slice through the shell. Don’t worry if you {accidentally} slice the shell in the process…keyword accidentally. You should NOT try to purposely cut through the shell when slicing your avocado.

Sliced Avocado

Now we will use the same slicing method to slice our avocados horizontally. Again, make sure that your knife slices the entire avocado from surface to shell without slicing through the shell. Once you are done with this, your avocado should resemble a checkerboard.

With a big spoon, scoop your avocado out of its shell into a large bowl. (This is the main reason we want to keep our shell intact.) The avocado pieces should easily fall from the shell and should resemble cube-like pieces in the bowl. Feel free to scrape the inside of the shell to get any avocado remains that did not land in the bowl.

Avocado Cubes

With a large spoon, stir the avocado cubes in a circular motion around the bowl. Your bowl should be large enough so the avocado cubes do not fly out when stirring. Yes, I have learned this the hard way! After a few sirs, you will notice the  avocado cubes are beginning to lose their cube-like shape and are becoming softer. Just keep stirring, just keep stirring. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist the Finding Nemo reference!) Keep stirring until your avocados begin to resemble mashed potatoes.

Don’t be alarmed if you find that some of your avocado pieces won’t smash. If this happens, press them against the side of the bowl with the back of your spoon and smash them on your own. If you think the piece is not ripe, simply remove it from the bowl and continue.

Continue stirring until reaching your desired consistency. Stir in the remaining ingredients and ta-da you are done!

TIP: If you are planning to store your guacamole in the fridge for later use, place the guacamole in an air-tight container and generously cover it with lime juice. This will prevent the guacamole from turning brown. When you’re ready to use the guacamole again you might notice some lime juice sitting at the bottom of the container and/or a few brown spots on your guac. Don’t worry, this is completely normal! You can bring your guac back to life by giving it a quick stir, allowing the avocados to absorb all of the lime juice lingering in your container. If your guacamole is still brown after stirring the juice back it, I hate to break it to you, but it has probably gone bad and you should throw it out.
